In Game 3 of the Carolina Border Battle presented by Rawlings of Myrtle Beach SC, the Carolina Forest Diamond Panthers were in a battle. It took 2 extra frames for the Panthers to defeat the Cougars of High Point Christian (NC) 9-8. The Panthers made a few defensive mistakes during the game to keep the Cougars around. Junior lefty Mike Foltz started for the Panthers on the mound and went 3 innings. Senior relief ace Konnor Walters came in and shut the door on the Cougars for the next 5 innings before giving way to Senior Max Ryerson in the drama filled 9th inning.
In the top of the 9th, the Cougars lead off with 2 hits before a base running mistake led to a double play. Ryerson them got the ground out to finish the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, the Panthers struck quick. A lead-off base hit by Junior Jackson Weatherwax followed by a strike out and a dropped 3rd strike in which the catcher allowed Weatherwax to advance to 3rd base and no throw was made to the first baseman. Senior Matt Beale was intentionally walked and loaded the bases for Sophomore Derek Rogers. Rogers took the second pitch he saw and hit a line drive base hit to left field to end the game for the Panthers.
The Panthers were paced at the plate by Junior Chase Hughes who had 3 RBIs, Rogers who was 2-4 with the GW RBI, Senior TJay Brunson who was 2-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, and Beale who had 3 walks and a sac bunt.
The Panthers will play in the Championship of the tournament a 6:00 pm Saturday March 3.
