The Diamond Panthers played a wild one Friday night at Carolina Forest High School against Region VI-5A foe and county rival, the Conway Tigers. The Tigers had a 5-0 advantage going into the bottom of the 6th inning when the Panthers plated their first run of the night. The Tigers got it right back in the top of the 7th before the the Panthers erupted for 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game and head into extra innings. The 8th and 9th innings were rather uneventful for both teams. The top of the 10th inning saw the Tigers go down quietly to bring up the heroics of the bottom of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th inning with one out and no one aboard the bases, Connor Meehan stepped to the plate and took a Ben Lewis 1-0 offering over the left field fence for a Panthers’ walk off Home Run and the win.
Kellan McDowell got the win on the mound for the Panthers. McDowell worked the last 4.1 innings striking out 2 and walking 2 while only allowing 2 hits. Bradleigh Wohlers (5 Ks, 4 BBs) got the start and worked the first 3.2 innings before giving way to Robbie Anderson (1 K, 1 BB) who worked the middle 2 innings.
At the plate, the Panther were led by Jackson McCoy added a double while Josh Watson added 2 RBIs. CJ Shupe, Braden McWhorter, Ashton Armstrong, and Wohlers each added a hit for the Panthers. The big blow was the solo home run in the 10th inning by Connor Meehan to walk it off.
The Panthers will be back in action next week as they take on the Sumter Gamecocks in a Region VI-5A Series. Monday and Wednesday (March 29 and 31) will be at Sumter at 6:30pm. Tuesday, March 30 will be at Carolina Forest at 6:30pm as it will be Senior Night for the Diamond Panthers three seniors (Meehan, Shupe, and Adam Janack). Tickets for the Panthers home game are located on the Carolina Forest Athletics website (cfhspanthers.com).
